I watched with awe the live coverage of the opening of the 2007 Special Olympics in Shanghai last night. The spectacular gala was star-studded with over 7,000 special athletes from 164 countries and territories participating.
A prelude to the Olympic Games in Beijing next year, the Shanghai Games is another testament to the continuing rise of China not only in the economy but even to sports as well.
This early, Guangzhou is also preparing to host the 2010 Asian Games.
The casts last night include Chinese President Hu Jintao, the Kennedy-Shriver family members like the Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver, his son Timothy who heads the Special Olympics, and son-in-law California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, actors Jacky Tan and Colin Farrel, and NBA superstar Yao Ming.
